In today's prevailing world, fast food has taken over almost every household in America; teenagers prefer eating hamburgers and fries than freshly prepared food. Fast food and eating out is more convenient for every working household; parents are working late and use the convenience of the restaurants open on their way home. Advertising creates the imagination that fast food is much tastier than spending the extra time at home cooking. Yet, home cook meals provide us with more control over what we eat, what type of ingredients we are ingesting, and where our raw ingredients are coming from.
Lifestyle is one of the main reasons for increased popularity of fast food. People are starting to work longer hours, shifts, and/or extended school days; there is no time to prepare ingredients or nutritious foods. For example, usually people have one-hour break for lunch while they working. As individuals, we become zombies to the work place and forget to take care of ourselves. Therefore, if someone works from 8am to 4 pm a daily and only have one-hour break, they will not go home and prepare their own food. With both parents or single parents working, there is less amount of preparing foods for the family. But enjoying a meal at home is cheaper by reducing the cost by many ways. It cuts traveling cost to restaurants, tips, no sales tax and service charge at home. Also, the cost of groceries is much cheaper than the cost of a restaurant entrée. For example, dinner usually costs $11 – 20 in a restaurant versus $1 – 3 at home.
The change in diet has serious effects. It starts with our health; many are becoming obese. People are consuming more unhealthy foods and becoming less productive. The increase of consuming fast food takes effect on our energy levels, weight gain, and prolonged ingestion can cause illness. Regular consumption of excess saturated fat raises the level of cholesterol in the blood, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. When consuming fast food or any junk, the heart over works and can not deposit such filth. It is like throwing away the left overs in the garbage disposal, but eating at home is more nutritious and healthier. The body exists as every human’s temple and should obtain proper management. Buying fresh vegetables and fresh meat to cook is better than the extra fats, sodium, and preservatives, which the fast food chain have to offer. Another…
